Isle of Palms Surf Fishing: Getting Started
Fishing License
For anyone who is 16 or older, the first step towards Isle of Palms surf fishing is to obtain a South Carolina saltwater fishing license. You can easily purchase one online through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources or at local tackle shops and sporting goods stores. This is also where you can get information about size and catch limits.
Rods, Bait, & Tackle
You also need some basic gear before your fishing adventure. To get started, be sure to have a surf rod and reel, a simple Carolina rig with weights, and fresh bait like shrimp, mullet, or sand fleas. Local tackle shops, such as Haddrell’s Point Tackle & Supply, or big-box stores like Walmart, are great places for your surf fishing gear. These are also where you will find local advice, tips, and tricks!
Other items to consider: PVC fishing rod holders (sand spike), cooler, ice, scissors, knife, fishing pliers, measuring tape, and a beach chair.
Tip: If you want to try surf fishing in winter, you will need a pair of tall rubber boots or waders to keep your feet and clothes dry.
Where to Surf Fish
Surf fishing is permitted on most beaches unless otherwise posted. You can walk right outside your beachside vacation rental and cast your line! The Isle of Palms and the Charleston area beach accesses are also good places to fish. However, be sure to follow posted rules and stay clear of swimmers and sunbathers.
Some favorite areas include Isle of Palms County Park, the north end near Dewees Inlet for deeper water, and Breach Inlet for anglers hoping to hook larger fish.
Note: Single-use plastic bags and polystyrene (also known as Styrofoam) coolers are not permitted on Isle of Palms beaches. Be sure to check the beach rules ahead of time.
Best Times to Fish
Surf fishing can be enjoyed year-round, but timing matters. Spring brings improving action as water warms, while summer offers exciting pompano fishing—best done early or late to avoid crowds. Fall is widely considered the best season for redfish and trout. Winter is quieter, but whiting and redfish still bite on mild days.
Remember that tides play a huge role in fish activity. An incoming tide is usually the most productive, pushing baitfish closer to shore and drawing predators behind them. Fish activity also increases around full and new moons, when tidal movement is strongest.
Early mornings and evenings are best—not only for fishing success, but also for quieter, more relaxed beach conditions.
